What is the pharmacy cancer care gap?
Community pharmacists are among the most trusted and accessible health professionals and are tasked with being exceptional healthcare generalists. Community pharmacists possess diverse, accurate and timely knowledge about a breadth of health conditions, medications, minor ailments and professional services.
At ECPN, we define the community pharmacy cancer care gap as the instances when patients with cancer could otherwise receive advice, support, treatment or symptom management in their community, but their pharmacist doesn’t have access to complete care information or the timely oncology resources and required expertise. The pharmacy cancer care gap creates challenges in patient care and treatment access, symptom and side effect mitigation and broader health system resource utilization.

ECPN is a network of passionate oncology pharmacy professionals linked through a series of innovative, on-demand oncology pharmacy programs designed to bridge the pharmacy cancer care gap in our communities. Through educational and collaborative clinical service programs, the ECPN integrates Extended Cancer Care and oncology pharmacy expertise into community pharmacy practice to support and enable pharmacies to serve their patients as specialized cancer care hubs in their communities. Through the ‘hub & spoke’ concept, ECPN integrates evidence-informed oncology pharmacy practice and expertise into partnering community pharmacies in a timely & accessible manner to support pharmacists and patients.

This innovative business-within-a-business Franchise model transforms partnering community pharmacies into community pharmacy cancer care hubs. Partnering community pharmacies collaborate with and integrate ECPN’s Extended Cancer Care into their pharmacy practice and can serve as a local specialty oncology pharmacy for their community.
